Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has said he wants to use his vast wealth to build the infrastructure needed to make space accessible to startups, not just send people to Mars.

Speaking at a private event at the Yale Club in New York, Bezos said that he considers his space company Blue Origin "the most important job" he does. But such work is possible only by liquidating $ 1 billion. Amazon shares every year for their bankroll.

Bezos said the current entry point for doing something spectacular in the space industry is currently in the hundreds of millions of dollars, but hopes to change that in the coming years to accommodate dorm room-style space startups.

"I want to take the assets I found from Amazon and translate them into heavy infrastructure that will help the next generation have a dynamic entrepreneurial approach in space - sort of build that infrastructure," he said.

"This is what is happening, this is the mission of Blue Origin. If we can do this, then all this will be launched, and thousands of companies will be engaged in creativity."

Blue Origin has already completed several successful flights of the reusable New Shepard rocket, and the company plans to use it to take people into space later this year.

Despite the similar ambitions of SpaceX and Virgin Galactic, Bezos insisted at the New York event that it was not a race, saying: "We'll fly when we're ready."

He also stated that his goal for Blue Origin is different from that of Musk, who consistently says he wants to send people to live on Mars.
